What does a typical day look like for you—between waiting tables and setting up banquets?
A typical day for me as a banquet server is a dynamic blend of preparation, service, and coordination. It often starts with setting up the event space—arranging tables, placing linens, setting up buffets, and making sure everything is perfectly in place before guests arrive. During the event, I move around the room, taking guest orders, serving food and drinks, and refilling beverages as needed. It’s all about creating a smooth and enjoyable experience for everyone attending, and that balance between precision and hospitality is what makes the job fulfilling.
How do you handle last-minute changes during event setups?
I stay calm and focused—that’s the most important thing. In high-pressure moments, it’s easy to get overwhelmed, but I’ve learned that clear thinking and quick decision-making make all the difference. I don’t hesitate to delegate tasks when needed; it helps maintain a smooth workflow and ensures everything gets done on time. Flexibility and teamwork are key to turning unexpected changes into successful results.
What’s one thing people don’t realize about working front-of-house?
Emotional labor. That’s what truly defines front-of-house work. It’s the often unseen effort of managing your own emotions while responding to guests with empathy, patience, and care—regardless of what’s happening behind the scenes. What many don’t realize is that it’s not just about delivering food, drinks, or service—it’s about creating a human experience. One that makes guests feel seen, valued, and understood. This emotional investment is at the heart of building genuine connections with customers. And when those relationships are nurtured, they foster trust, loyalty, and repeat business. Over time, that doesn’t just improve the guest experience—it drives brand strength and profitability. In today’s world where people have endless choices, emotional labor is a true differentiator. It’s what transforms good service into unforgettable hospitality.
Morning prep or evening shifts?
I lean toward morning shifts, especially because they offer a more structured rhythm to the day. Starting early means I get to set the tone, get organized, and handle tasks with a fresh mindset. Plus, there’s a certain calmness and focus that comes with the early hours. It may mean waking up earlier, but the sense of accomplishment by midday—and having the rest of the day ahead—makes it worth it.
Quiet elegance or bold decor?
Definitely bold décor! I love when a space makes a statement the moment you walk in. Bold designs bring energy, personality, and a sense of drama that instantly captivates. Whether it’s vibrant colors, striking art, or daring textures—bold décor speaks with confidence and leaves a lasting impression.
What are your long-term personal goals, and how have they shaped your growth?
My long-term personal goals have always centered around preserving my self-respect and building a life rooted in personal integrity. This has required me to engage in a continuous and often uncomfortable process of self-examination—looking inward to evaluate my behaviors, thoughts, and patterns, and asking tough questions about what truly aligns with the person I aspire to be. The journey hasn’t been easy or fast. One of the most difficult lessons I had to learn was to stop measuring my worth by others’ opinions—whether positive or negative. I realized that praise and criticism only have the power I choose to give them. True self-worth, for me, had to come from within. So, I made a conscious decision to define myself by values that matter deeply to me—values that are non-negotiable regardless of circumstance. For me, those are honesty, kindness, doing no harm whenever possible, and above all, holding myself accountable. I’ve come to see self-accountability not as a burden, but as a lifelong commitment to growth—not growth through perfection, but through awareness, responsibility, and the will to do better. My goals aren’t tied to status, titles, or external success. They’re about becoming someone I can be proud of—someone whose actions reflect a life lived with intention and integrity.
