What does a typical day in housekeeping look like for you?
A typical day in housekeeping is busy, demanding, and at times surprisingly fun. It is busy because each steward is assigned a considerable number of rooms, and this allocation immediately sets the tone for the day. It feels like working toward a target — not just in numbers, but in quality. Every room must be cleaned to the same high standard, regardless of time pressure. There is no room for shortcuts because each guest deserves consistency and excellence. It can also be stressful. In the course of cleaning, we encounter unexpected challenges — stained sheets that require extra attention, torn linens that must be replaced promptly, stubborn marks that refuse to come off easily, or last-minute requests from guests. These moments test our patience and problem-solving skills. However, stress in housekeeping is not just about physical work; it is about maintaining composure while ensuring perfection. Despite all this, the day can also be fun. Working alongside colleagues creates moments of laughter and shared experiences. Sometimes we joke about the funny situations we encounter or encourage one another when the workload feels heavy. Those moments of camaraderie help us push through and remind us that we are part of a team.
What part of your job do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy room resets the most. There is something deeply satisfying about walking into a room that has just been vacated and transforming it back into a perfect, welcoming space. A room reset allows me to recreate the same standard every single time. It challenges me to be consistent — to ensure that every pillow is placed correctly, every sheet is tucked flawlessly, and every surface is spotless. Room resets also give me the opportunity to improve myself daily. Even if I have cleaned hundreds of rooms before, I always aim to do better than the previous day. For me, it is not just about cleaning; it is about restoring comfort and preparing a space where the next guest can feel relaxed and valued.
What’s one task you take the most pride in—and why?
I take the most pride in cleaning guest-occupied rooms. When a guest is staying in the room, it means they will return to it later in the day. That gives me a special sense of responsibility. I want to prove, every single day of their stay, that we maintain our standards consistently. An occupied room requires extra care because the guest’s belongings are present. You must respect their privacy while ensuring cleanliness. It is about attention to detail — arranging items neatly, refreshing the space, and leaving it even better than they left it. Knowing that a guest returns to a clean, comfortable room brings me satisfaction and pride in my work.
What’s your favorite scent or product to use while cleaning?
I enjoy using Karis body spray because of its lasting fragrance. Scent plays a powerful role in how a room feels. A clean room is not only about what you see — it is also about what you smell. When a room carries a fresh, pleasant scent, it enhances the overall experience for the guest. Fragrance creates memory. A guest may forget small details, but they will remember how the room made them feel. A lasting fragrance adds to that feeling of comfort and freshness.
If your work style had a name, what would it be?
If I were to give my work style a name, I would call it “Focused Excellence.” My approach involves staying attentive, even under pressure. I may experience different emotions throughout the day, but I remain committed to completing my tasks properly. No matter how challenging the workload is, my goal is always to deliver results that meet the hotel’s standards.
Describe your job using only emojis!
🤪😭🤔😫🙌🏽👿😤😔😆🤦🏽‍♂️🏃🏽‍♂️🙏🏼😎🫡🙆‍♂️🥹 These emojis reflect the emotional journey of housekeeping. There are moments of confusion, stress, frustration, and deep thinking. There are times when you feel exhausted and even overwhelmed. But there are also moments of pride, laughter, gratitude, and confidence. It is a role filled with emotion — yet at the end of the day, there is satisfaction.
Fresh linen or sparkling bathroom?
Both are equally important. Fresh linen brings a unique kind of satisfaction. The sight of neatly spread sheets and perfectly arranged pillows gives the bed a welcoming appearance. It represents comfort and rest. On the other hand, a sparkling bathroom speaks directly to hygiene. Guests may judge the cleanliness of an entire room based on the bathroom. When it shines, it reflects high standards and attention to detail. Together, fresh linen and a sparkling bathroom complete the guest experience.
Feather duster or vacuum?
Both tools are essential. The feather duster helps remove dust from surfaces that are not easily reachable. It ensures that shelves, corners, and hidden areas remain clean. After dusting, the vacuum completes the process by removing dirt from carpets and floors. Each tool plays a role in achieving a thoroughly clean space.
Room reset or deep clean?
I prefer deep cleaning because it allows me to understand cleaning at a deeper level. Deep cleaning goes beyond the surface. It involves inspecting hidden corners, removing accumulated dirt, and restoring the room to its best condition. It is more demanding, but it also brings greater satisfaction because you know you have truly refreshed the space.
Who inspires you the most at work?
Mr. Prospero Ahuaza inspires me the most. He is not just a mentor but a true leader. He guides us with patience and leads by example. Watching how he handles responsibilities motivates me to improve myself. His leadership reminds me that excellence is not just about completing tasks but about influencing others positively.
